Clemson Defeats Southern Mississippi 6-1

Feb. 27, 2010

CLEMSON, SC-Clemson won its ninth straight match today with a 6-1 win over Southern Mississippi in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Saturday morning.

With the win, Clemson improves to 9-0 on the year, while Southern Mississippi falls to 4-5. The nine Clemson wins are the most victories to start a season since the 2007 team won its first nine matches that year. The school record for most matches won to start a season is 16. The 1969 team was undefeated that year and finished with a 16-0 record.

Should Clemson defeat Navy later tonight, the Tigers would tie the school record for the third best start in school history with 10 consecutive victories. The 1994 squad had 10 wins to start that season.

Kevin Galloway leads Clemson this season in victories. He now has a 12-6 record overall in singles and an 8-1 mark in dual match play.

“We continue to grow and show improvement,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “We are starting to trust our games when we are behind. Our focus and endurance is also improving.”

Clemson will play host to Navy today at 3:00 p.m. (Saturday, February 27) at the Hoke Sloan Tennis center in the second match of a double header.
