Clemson 12th Place after First Round of Southern Highland Las Vegas Invitational

March 9, 2007

Clemson, SC–Freshman Ben Martin fired an even par 72 and junior Tanner Ervin added a 73 to lead Clemson to a 297 team score and a 12th place standing in the 15-team field of the Southern Highland Las Vegas Intercollegiate. The tournament is being played at the 7510-yard Southern Highland Golf Course in Las Vegas, NV.

Martin was two-under-par on the back nine to finish his even par round on a high note. He had a double bogey on the par four seventh hole that prevented him from ranking in the top 10 among the individuals. He is 15th as it is with his opening round 72.

Ervin had a solid round, but a double bogey on the 12th hole hurt his round. He did finish with a birdie on the 18th, one of three Tigers to birdie the 622-yard final hole. He stands in 21st place individually.

Sam Saunders had a 74 in the opening round and stands in 33rd place in the 81-player field. Saunders had three bogeys and a birdie to go with 14 pars on Friday.

David May and Phillip Mollica both had six over par rounds of 78. May had eight bogeys and two birdies, while Mollica had a pair of double bogeys.

Clemson is playing the event without its best player, freshman Kyle Stanley, who is preparing to play in next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour. UCLA has the team lead with a six-under par 282. Georgia is second at 285, while Georgia Tech is third at 286. The action in the 54-hole tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday.
