Chepngetich Earns First Place Finish at Furman Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. – In her second event as a Clemson Tiger, newcomer Gladys Chepngetich finished first in the Women’s 6K at the Furman Invitational. The Clemson women finished 3rd overall while the men finished 4th in the Men’s 6K.

“To see Clemson cross the line first is always a great thing to see. Walking away from this one, I see some things we need to work on as a group but overall, especially with the women’s performances, I think it was really good,” Head Coach Vicky Pounds said.

Chepngetich stayed within the lead for most of the event as the freshman found herself leading the group in the third lap. In the fourth and final loop, Chepngetich used her speed to push herself past the other leaders and cross the finish line with an impressive time of 20 minutes and 47 seconds.

Finishing in the top-25 on the women’s side was Caelin Sloan, another newcomer on the Tigers roster. Sloan crossed the line in 22 minutes and 14 seconds. Also finishing in the top-25 was Maddie Dineen who completed the 6K in 22 minutes and 20 seconds.

With help from Chepngetich, the Clemson women finished third overall with a final score of 80 points.

On the men’s side, Sawyer Dagan was the first Tiger to cross the finish line as he finished 12th overall in the Men’s 6k. Throughout the four laps, Dagan was consistent when staying with the leading group of runners. Dagan finished the event in 18 minutes and 30 seconds.

The next Tiger to cross the line after Dagan was Ryan Sula as he completed the 6K in 19 minutes and 17 seconds, earning him a 31st place finish. The Clemson Tigers earned a 4th place overall finish in the Men’s 6K.
