KANSAS CITY, KS – The Clemson University Athletic Department recently hosted Career Athletes, LLC on campus to conduct student-athlete seminars focused on “Developing your Career Game Plan” and “How to Sell Yourself as an Athlete.”
Reggie Simpkins, Director of Career Services for student-athletes said, “We appreciate Career Athletes for sharing with our students. There were over 300 athletes in attendance and we have received great reviews from our students! We look forward to continuing our relationship with Career Athletes so that we can better prepare our students for life after college.”
Based out of Olathe, Kansas, Career Athletes is the nation’s largest and oldest online organization linking together current and former student-athletes, business organizations, and athletic departments. For the past 12 years, Career Athletes has conducted over 900 campus training and development seminars in front of more than 260,000 student-athletes.
More than 80 percent of Clemson student-athletes were in attendance on September 20th as Career Athletes representatives DJ Washington and Bart Heres conducted the seminars.
Heres, who is the Vice President of Executive Search and Business Development at Career Athletes explained, “As an alumnus of the graduate program of Clemson University, I am so proud of the Clemson Athletic Department for placing such a strong emphasis on Career Education and Development for their student athletes. Reggie Simpkins and the rest of the team there are doing a great job preparing the young men and women student-athletes to transition from their academic and athletic careers to the working world.”
In addition, Career Athletes was able to bring this event to campus through the sponsorship of national employer partner, Northwestern Mutual. Northwestern Mutual provides a top 10 internship program that targets competitive individuals looking to create an expansive network.
John Tripoli, Financial Representative at Northwestern Mutual in Greenville, SC said, “We were impressed in the turn out from the athletes and pleased to offer a fantastic, Top 10 internship experience to complement what these students have accomplished.”
“We are excited to partner with Career Athletes to identify those students that are energized about their future and eager to develop the professional skills to be successful in a field of work,” explained Tripoli.
The seminars for student-athletes are geared towards using a unique skill set they obtain while competing in college athletics and how to use and articulate these skills and traits at an interview or on a resume.
“Having over 300 athletes in attendance at the Career Athletes seminar last week was a clear testament to the commitment of everyone involved with Clemson University Athletics in ensuring their student-athletes are successful far beyond their four or five years on campus,” said Heres, a 1987 graduate of the MBA program at Clemson.
Topics covered in the seminar are: knowing your competition, identifying skills learned through athletic preparation and how to use these skills to your advantage after graduation, networking, preparation for an interview, and how to differentiate yourself from others. Student-athletes received professional career preparation manuals to be used as a guide throughout the seminar and in days to come.
Student-athletes also have career education resources available 24 hours a day through the Career Resource Center in their account at careerathletes.com. Members can also utilize the Virtual Career Coach to stay in touch with Career Athletes representatives at a later date.
