Be a T.I.G.E.R! Character Education Program: Be a T.I.G.E.R! Newspaper

The second component of the Be A T.I.G.E.R! character education program is the Be a T.I.G.E.R! Newspaper. The newspaper is entirely written, produced and illustrated each year by a staff made up of Clemson University student-athletes. For the past two years, Alyssa Kulik (women’s track & field and cross country) has been the editor of the newspaper, leading a team of six student-athletes.

Each year the newspaper begins with a theme. For instance, last year’s theme was centered on the Magic CAT bus. The newspaper followed the adventures of the Tiger as he traveled around Clemson learning about the five character-building traits specified by the Be a T.I.G.E.R! character education program. Along with the central story, the newspaper contains articles on nutrition, athlete interviews and activities for students to complete and color.

Over 10,000 copies of the newspaper were produced last year and distributed at various schools and events. The goal of the newspaper is to reinforce teamwork, integrity, gratitude, education and respect as vital character traits that each child should strive for.

This year, Lisa Girard (women’s track & field) will be the editor.  The staff for this year is already in the process of brainstorming a new theme for the seventh edition of the newspaper.
