Bayou Bound: Volleyball Set For Sugar Bowl Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson volleyball team travels to New Orleans, Louisiana for Tulane’s Allstate Sugar Bowl Volleyball Collegiate Classic Friday and Saturday (Sept. 14-15). The Tigers are seeking their third consecutive tournament title this season after winning back-to-back tournaments at Appalachian State and the Big Orange Bash in Clemson, South Carolina last weekend. Clemson has won six of its last seven matches, including its last three.

Clemson has won six of its last seven matches including its last three to win the Big Orange Bash tournament … As champions of the Big Orange Bash, the Tigers won their second consecutive tournament (at Appalachian State, Aug. 31 – Sept. 1) … After winning back-to-back tournament MVP honors, outside/right side hitter Solei Thomas was named ACC Freshman of the Week for the second straight week on Monday … The Detroit native averaged a team-best 3.90 kills per set, hit .312 and recorded 7.0 blocks at the Big Orange Bash … Thomas’s back-to-back weekly freshman honors are the first for a Tiger since Jessi Betcher won ACC Rookie of the Week on four consecutive occasions in 1999 … Joining Thomas on the Big Orange Bash All-Tournament Team was redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Brooke Bailey and freshman outside hitter Ashtynne Alberts … Bailey led all Clemson hitters for the tournament with a .344 hitting percentage, while Alberts collected her third and fourth double-doubles of the year … Clemson also saw contributions from freshman setter Gabby Easton, who is currently leads all freshmen in the country in assists (11.78/set), ranks ninth in the nation among all players and is the ACC’s assist leader … At the Big Orange Bash, Easton averaged 13.30 assists per set, including a tournament-best 56 assists in the Tigers’ tournament opener, a 3-1 win over UAB … Easton’s season high of 60 assists, came Clemson’s five-set win over Appalachian State … Her 51 assists in the Tigers’ sweep over Davidson to win the Appalachian Invitational are the most by any Division I player in a three-set match this season … Freshman libero Torie Frederick currently ranks seventh in the ACC in digs (4.05/set) … As a team Clemson ranks second in the ACC in both kills (14.11/set) and assists (13.32/set) … Head coach Michaela Franklin is currently 3-0 in five-set matches as Clemson head coach with two of those victories coming this season … Clemson’s lone five-set win in 2017 came against current then Jacksonville head coach Julie Darty, who is in her first season as head coach at Mississippi State, which Clemson defeated in the Tigers’ opening match of the Appalachian Invitational.
