Baseball Drops ACC Contest to Wake Forest, 5-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior righthander Mike MacDougal tossed eight strong innings and Danny Borrell went 3-for-3 with two home runs as the 24th-ranked Demon Deacons defeated Clemson, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.

With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 17-6 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Clemson drops to 14-9 and 2-1 in league play.

MacDougal (6-1) surrendered five base hits — four of which were singles — and struck out eight batters while allowing just one run. He stranded seven Clemson runners on base and induced three double play balls to work out of trouble. Freshman David Bush worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Demon Deacons.

Clemson starter Ryan Mottl (2-2) took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 7 hits in seven-plus innings of work.

The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ben Danosky led off the frame with a walk, advanced to third on a single from Borrell and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Corey Slavik. A solo home run from Borrell to lead off the fourth inning gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead and Scott Daeley scored the Deacs’ third run of the game in the fifth inning when he walked, stole second base and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jon Palmieri.

Clemson finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning when Patrick Boyd led off the frame with a double and later scored on a RBI-single by Derek Borgert. The Tigers had a chance to cut the lead even further when they loaded the bases later in that inning, but MacDougal worked out of the jam to keep the two-run lead intact.

A two-run homer from Borrell, his fifth of the season, gave Wake Forest a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Borrell finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and he has now reached base safely in each of his last nine plate appearances. Palmieri and Andrew Riepe each had two hits for the Deacons while the Tigers’ Kurt Bultmann went 2-for-4 in the game.

Wake Forest and Clemson will continue the three-game series on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. each day.
