TULSA, Okla. – Ryuhei Azuma clinched a spot in the round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championships Tuesday afternoon in his first match of the day after defeating Baylor’s Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
“What a great win for Ryuhei,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “His opponent from Baylor is a fantastic player, and Ryuhei had to dig really deep to pull off the win.” I could not be more proud of him for the way he competed and the high level of tennis he played throughout the match.”
Azuma returned to the court and took on Oklahoma’s Justin Schlageter at 3 p.m. CT at the Tennis Center in LaFortune Park and fell just short in a three set battle by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 4-6 to narrowly miss the main draw.
“I am so sad for Ryuhei,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “I know how badly he wanted to qualify for the main draw. He worked so hard the past few days and just came up a bit short. I am proud of Ryuhei and the way he battled. He will learn from this and be a better player down the road. We will get back to work this week and keep pushing to get better individually and as a program.”
