Adams? Facility Record Highlights the Orange & Purple Winter Classic

CLEMSON, SC – Spencer Adams established a facility record in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday to lead Clemson track & field’s efforts at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic, the opening meet of the 2012-13 indoor season.  Among the Tiger women, Whitney Fountain set a personal best with 3,998 points en route to winning the pentathlon at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. Adams coasted to a time of 7.72 in the preliminary round, but completely outclassed the field in the final with his facility record of 7.62.  Adams’ personal best in the event is 7.60, so he was only two one-hundredths off that mark in the first meet of the season.  Keni Harrison followed with a win in the women’s high hurdles, clocking a time of 8.19 in the prelim and final. Fountain opened the pentathlon with an 8.70 in the 60 hurdles and followed with a best of 5’9.25” in the high jump.  She achieved the height, a personal best, on her last attempt.  Fountain had an easy personal best in the shot put with a throw of 36’8.5”, and followed with an 18’9” long jump and time of 2:27.39 to close out the 800 meters.  Her pentathlon total was third-best in Clemson history. Clemson took the top four spots in the men’s 300 meters and nine of the top 10 in the women’s 300 on Saturday.  La’Mont Jackson won the men’s race with a great time of 33.89, No. 5 in Clemson’s record books.  In the women’s race, Dezerea Bryant (38.36) held off classmate Harrison (38.38) at the tape to take the top prize.  Brianna Rollins was fourth at 39.05. Ryan Mangone was beat at the line by USC Upstate’s Matt Johnson, but the senior took second place out of 16 runners in the men’s 500 meters.  He had a time of 1:05.02, besting teammate Nathaniel Johnson (1:06.06).  Lindsey Bellaran had a solid debut, taking second place in the women’s 1000 meters with a time of 2:58.40 – No. 3 in school history. In the vertical jumps, Clemson took the women’s pole vault and high jump.  Lauren Terstappen returned to action after missing most of the 2012 outdoor season due to an elbow injury.  She jumped 12’3.5″ to take the top spot in the pole vault.  Caroline Bond was the runner-up with a clearance of 11’11.75”, while freshman Mimieux Land took the top position in the high jump with a 5’7” clearance.  She was also third in the long jump.   Speaking of the long jump, senior Jasmine Brunson won the event with a 19’0” leap on a short approach.  In the men’s long jump, Shai Carpenter also operated on a short approach, hitting a mark of 21’11” and taking third place.  Carpenter’s classmate, Torian Ware, was runner-up in the men’s high jump Saturday after he went over the bar at 6’10.75”. Brittney Waller was outstanding in her first meet under a new coach, assistant Chris Huffins.  She put together a throw of 68’1.75” – the second-best weight throw mark of her career.  She won the event with ease.  Also in the throws, Cory Thalheimer was runner-up in the men’s shot put.  The Hopkinton, MA native hit a mark of 54’5.25”. Clemson returns to action after the New Year to host the Tiger Challenge on Friday, Jan. 11.
