CLEMSON, S.C. — A successful opening day of the ACC Rowing Championship for Clemson saw the Tigers qualify for the grand final in each of the five races. Clemson finished in the top three in each of its heats — and the top six overall in each of the prelims — on the calm Lake Hartwell waters. The regatta opened with two heats for each race on Friday morning. In addition to Clemson, No. 3 Virginia, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 17 Duke, Boston College, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina and Notre Dame are competing in the conference event.
With cool temperatures, light winds and sunny skies making for an ideal rowing morning, Clemson posted second-place finishes in its 1V8+, 2V8+, 1V4+ and 3V8+ heats. The Tigers crossed the finish line third in their 2V4+ race. All five results were sufficient in qualifying each of Clemson’s five boats for Saturday morning’s grand finals. The boats that did not qualify for the grand finals will compete in the petite finals on Saturday.
In the premier sweep race, Clemson’s 1V8+ boat, which Kate Hadley coxed, finished with a time of 6:43.624. As for the main sculling event, the 1V4+ boat fielded by the Tigers dominated down the stretch, with coxswain Julia Suplick and her squad overtaking Louisville and finishing as the runner-up in 7:38.899.
Competition will resume with the 3V8+ petite final at 8:05 a.m. on Saturday, May 15. Conditions at Clemson’s boathouse are expected to once again be pleasant as the Tigers and their ACC opponents look to finish strong in their quests for the ACC crown.
Races will be streamed live on ACCNX. Live results will also be posted on HereNow.com.
