CLEMSON, S.C.- Freshman Rinon Okuwaki (Saitama, Japan) was named the ACC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Okuwaki extended her undefeated streak after a 4-0 weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. for ITA Kickoff.
With her doubles partner, Senior Jade Groen, Okuwaki took her first doubles win of the weekend to help secure the doubles point for the Tigers, 7-6 (5) vs Ziva Falkner and Duru Soke of No. 13 Pepperdine Friday. Friday afternoon, Okuwaki earned a singles win and the first singles point for Clemson with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 in straight sets.
Saturday Okuwaki grabbed her first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-4 doubles win over No. 15 ranked Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso from No. 16 Tennessee. Heading into singles, Okuwaki notched the second singles point for the Tigers following Sophomore Artemis Aslanisvili with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Francesca Mattioli.
Okuwaki and the Tigers head to Kansas City, Mo. January 30th to face off with Kansas St. and then take on Kansas February 1st at 1 p.m.
