CLEMSON, S.C. – After serving as a volunteer assistant coach with Clemson Women’s Tennis in 2022, Sander Koning has been hired as an assistant coach for the men’s tennis program. He will join new head coach, Brandon Wagner, and the rest of his staff.
“I am thrilled to add Sander Koning to our coaching staff,” said Wagner. “He has been in the industry for a long time and will provide lots of valuable experience to the program and players. Sander will play an integral part in laying the foundation and building the culture we are doing now for the future. Being an alum of the program, he has first-hand experience on what it means to represent Clemson and can relate to the players on campus. I am lucky to have him and now believe we have one of the best coaching staffs in the country.”
As a student-athlete, Koning competed at Clemson in the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions. A two-time All-ACC Player in 2003 and 2005, Koning was also a four-time selection to the All-ACC Academic Team from 2002 to 2006. Majoring in sport marketing, Koning was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was named the men’s tennis team captain in 2005-06.
“I am very grateful to Brandon for giving me this opportunity to work with him and Austin,” said Koning. “Being able to coach for Clemson has always been a dream of mine, and I believe under Brandon’s guidance, we can make this program competitive again on a national level.”
Koning was the head coach of the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team from 2015-2020, leading the Eagles to a 79-67 record during his tenure. He was named the 2017-18 Sun Belt Co-Coach of the Year.
Koning has played professionally and earned ATP points in professional club tennis competitions and tournaments.
