ORLANDO, Fla. – Top-seeded North Carolina defeated No. 3 seed Clemson 4-0 in the championship game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tournament at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL. to claim their 10th consecutive league championship.
The Tar Heels jumped on the scoreboard just 4:25 into the game when ACC Player of the Year Cindy Parlow scored on a header off a corner kick by Rebekah McDowell. North Carolina made the score 2-0 at 51:46 in the second half on a nearly identical play after Laurie Schwoy found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick by McDowell.
UNC’s Beth Sheppard scored from 20 yards out when she booted the ball through the hands of Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson in the game’s 66th minute. The Tar Heels’ Lorrie Fair provided the final 4-0 margin when she scored from 15 yards out after a lob from Danielle Borgman at 89:32.
The UNC defense held the Tiger offense at bay all afternoon as UNC keeper Siri Mulinix made a season-high four saves to preserve the shutout. Clemson, which had scored six goals in their previous two games in the ACC tournament, was held scoreless on 10 shots on goal.
