GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 47th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, noting academic excellence by student-athletes for the 2002-03 school year, contains a record 1,762 performers as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
The Honor Roll is comprised of those student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. Duke led the league in total selections for the 15th straight year, placing 346 on the list, while North Carolina was second with 257 student-athletes. Virginia was third with 230 student-athletes and Clemson was fourth with 199, followed by NC State (181), Maryland (173), Florida State (160), Wake Forest (112) and Georgia Tech (104).
Featured on this year’s Honor Roll are several student-athletes that were NCAA Individual Champions or led their team to an NCAA Title including Clemson’s golfer D.J. Trahan, a four-time ACC Honor Roll member who led the Tigers to their first-ever NCAA Men’s Golf Title. Florida State’s Lacy Janson and North Carolina’s Alice Schmidt were both crowned NCAA Champions in the pole vault and the 800 meter and distance medley relay, respectively. Wake Forest captured the NCAA Field Hockey Championship behind the play of Kelly Dostal who led the ACC in scoring and was the ACC Tournament MVP.
Also included on the list of top student-athletes are several players who earned top honors in their respective sports. Virginia football player Matt Schaub was the 2002 ACC Football Player of the Year. Georgia Tech senior placekicker Luke Manget finished his career with an ACC record 160 consecutive PATs and is third on the ACC career scoring list with 322 points. Duke lacrosse player Kate Kaiser, Clemson football standout Jackie Robinson and Florida State track and field performer Gary Visser are all five-time ACC Academic Honor Roll members and were recipients of a 2003 ACC Weaver, James, Corrigan Post-Graduate Scholarship. Duke basketball player Vicki Kraphol makes her second-straight appearance after leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four while Nick Horvath finished his Duke basketball career as a four-time ACC Honor Roll member. Maryland’s women’s lacrosse player Kelly Coppedge was named ACC Player of the Year while NC State’s Joe Gaetti led the Wolfpack to the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals.
