Clemson Finishes T-Seventh at Nike Collegiate

Clemson, S.C.—Carson Young had a career best 206 score for 54 holes, including a three-under par 69 on Tuesday to lead Clemson to a tie for seventh place in the 15-team Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge in  North Plains, Ore.   The 54-hole tournament was played on the Ghost Course (par 71) for the first round, then   the Witch Hollow Course (par 72) for the final two rounds.

Young finished in a tie for fifth place, his best career finish in a 54-hole event.  He finished third at the Hummingbird Invitational last year, but that tournament was cut to just 18 holes due to weather.

The native of Pendleton, S.C. had rounds of 68-69-69 for his nine-under-par score of 206.  It was his career best 54-hole score by eight shots and he became just the 11th player in Clemson history to have three rounds in the 60s in the same tournament.   He had just three total rounds in the 60s in 47 career rounds entering the tournament.

Young had 16 birdies over the 54 holes, tied for third in the field of 75 golfers.  He was also tied for fourth in scoring on par three holes and was tied for seventh in scoring on par five holes at seven-under-par.

Beau Hossler of Texas won the tournament by six shots with a score of 197, 18-under par.  Adam Wood of Duke was second at 203, while Lee McCoy of Georgia was third at 204.  Greyson Sigg, also of Georgia, finished fourth at 10-under-par 205.

Wake Forest won the team competition with an 823 score, 37-under-par.  Southern California and Duke tied for second at 826.   Clemson tied for seventh with the school it played in the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, 15th ranked Oklahoma, with an 849 score.  The national 15-team field included 11 of the top 25 teams in the nation according to the Golf Coaches Association top 25.

Stephen Behr was Clemson’s second best golfer for the tournament and like Young fired a three under par 69 on Tuesday.  Behr, whose round included an eagle three on the par five 14th hole,  finished in a tie for 31st place with a two-under-par score of 213.

Cody Proveaux was Clemson’s third best player on Tuesday as the senior shot an even par 72.  He shot a 33 on the back and birdied his final hole.

Senior Miller Capps, who was two-under-par heading into the final round, shot a 76 on Tuesday and finished in 44th place with a 217 score.  Austin Langdale also shot a 76 on Tuesday and finished in 50th place at 218.
