Mayorova Defeats Ranked Opponent in Tigers’ 5-2 Loss to No. 21 Wake Forest

CLEMSON, S.C. – Sophomore Cristina Mayorova displayed an amazing performance with a ranked win over #52 Carolyn Campana, but the No. 62 Clemson Women’s Tennis team (8-8, 2-6 ACC) fell to No. 21 Wake Forest (10-6, 2-3 ACC) by a score of 5-2.

The Demon Deacons got off to a quick start, taking the first win on Court 1, 6-1. The duo of Samantha Buyckx and Ali DeSpain responded with their own 6-2 victory on Court 2. With a tied score, Eleni Louka and Lana Sipek fought a close match to ultimately lose the set 4-6, giving Wake Forest the doubles point.

Wake Forest maintained control of the match early in singles play, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage. But it was Mayorova who made a big impact with her commanding 6-2, 7-5 victory on court 1 against No. 52 Campana to give the Tigers their first point of the match. This is the sophomore’s second ranked win this season. The Demon Deacons secured the next two points before Buyckx shined once again securing the last singles point for Clemson with a three-set come-from-behind victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“Today’s match was very close. The doubles point was obviously key and we put ourselves in position to win and it just didn’t go our way.” said Head Coach Christy Lynch. “Everyone fought hard. Samantha has been doing an incredible job for us and Cristina had a great win today and played awesome! We need to regroup now after a tough weekend and get ready for Furman.”

Up Next: The Tigers return to Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on Saturday, March 26 to take on Furman. The first serve is slated for noon.
