CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s and women’s track and field teams will play host to the Clemson Opener Friday, December 4, at Littlejohn Coliseum. The meet will begin at 10 a.m.
Participating teams include Clemson, Alabama (Women), Appalachian State, Brevard, Georgia Tech, Morehouse, North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State, West Georgia, Western Carolina and Winthrop.
The Clemson men’s team, under the direction of head coach Bob Pollock, is looking to claim its third-straight ACC indoor title this season. The Tigers have added eight high school All-Americans to this year’s team, giving Clemson the third-best recruiting class in the country, according to Track & Field News.
Leading the Tigers in the sprint events will be senior Davidson Gill, junior Shawn Crawford and freshman Ato Modibo. Gill, who earned All-America honors as a member of the 4x400m relay team last season, and Modibo will compete in the 500m and the 4x400m relay. Crawford, the defending national champion in the 200m, will represent Clemson in the 60m dash, 300m and 4x400m relay. Senior Esteban Diaz earned all-Southeast Region accolades during cross country season after placing 18th at the region meet. He will compete in the 3000m.
In the field events, junior Bryan Williams will compete in the high jump, and freshman Kai Maull will participate in the long jump. Two veteran all-ACC performers return for Clemson in the pole vault. Sophomore Ben Hess and senior Jorge Tienda tied for second place at the ACC indoor meet last season.
The Clemson women’s team placed second at the ACC indoor meet last season, Ron Garner’s first season as head coach. The Tigers will be led by senior Nikkie Bouyer, a two-time All-American last season in the 55m hurdles and 4×400 meter relay. She will compete in the 60m hurdles and the mile relay today.
Sophomore Shekera Weston earned All-American honors as a part of the 4x400m relay team last year. She will compete in the 60m dash, the 500m and the mile relay today. All-ACC Teri Robinson will compete in the 60m dash, the 300m and the long jump competition. Robinson placed second in the 60m at the ACC indoor meet as a freshman last year.
In the field events, sophomore Jamie Moton returns as the defending ACC outdoor shot put champion. She will compete in the shot put and weight throw competitions. Sophomore Mandy McLane will compete in the pole vault competition after earning All-ACC status as a freshman last season. Freshman Erin Nett, a high school All-American in the pole vault, will be competing in her first collegiate meet today.
