Clemson Men’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Maryland and Virginia Tech

COLLEGE PARK, MD- The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their seasons on the road in College Park, MD in a double-dual meet against Maryland and Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Tiger men defeated Maryland by a score of 137-104, and earned another victory over Virginia Tech, 126-117. The Tiger women’s team defeated the Hokies, 149-94, but fell to the Terps, 173-70. The Clemson men’s team is 2-0 on the season, while the women are 1-1.

Craig Thomas and Eric Shulick led the Tigers in the diving competition. Thomas won the three-meter with 269.05 points, and finished second in the one-meter with 242.00 points. Shulick placed first in the one-meter (249.50) for Clemson. Jonathon Folds finished in third place in the three-meter (229.85), while Marsh Lindley claimed third place in the one-meter (226.80) and fifth in the three-meter (222.50) for the Tigers.

Brent Hitchcock led the Clemson men with a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.03. Jordan Raynovich and Greg Middleton finished third and fourth in the 200 free with times of 1:44.23 and 1:44.47, respectively. Hitchcock placed second in the 100 free (46.79) for Clemson.

In the distance freestyle events, the Tigers were led by Buddy Reed and Jon Mengering. Reed was second in the 500 free (4:41.56) and fourth in the 1000 free (9:48.77), while Mengering finished third in the 1000 free (9:40.84) and fifth in the 500 free (4:43.97).

Kummer led the Tigers in the 200 fly, with a second-place finish and a time of 1:51.89. Thomas Rappold and Benjamin Kanoy took third and fourth place in the 200 fly for the Tigers, posting times of 1:55.85 and 1:56.01, respectively.

Mark Henly posted a time of 1:54.94 for a second-place finish in the 200 IM for the Tigers. Ryan Cassella placed fourth in the event with a time of 1:56.98, while Charlie Dillon was fifth in 1:57.20. Henly finished in third-place in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.28, and Dillon finished fifth (1:54.11) in the event. Gregor Govse finished second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:06.80, while Cassella was third (2:06.84).

In the 400 medley relay, the Tigers’ team of Mark Henly, Ryan Cassella, Rob Kummer and Derrick Mulder placed second, posting a time of 3:24.32. The 400 free relay team of Mulder, Kummer, Josh Williams and Hitchcock, finished third (3:09.91).

The Tiger women’s team was also led by divers Shastin Leathers and Jessica Watcke. Leathers posted a second-place finish in the three-meter (207.45) and a third-place finish in the one-meter (214.25), while Watcke was second in the one-meter (230.40) and third in the three-meter (191.75).

The 400 medley relay team of Lindsey Kroeger, Mandy Commons, Elise Thieler and Jenna Burtch finished second with a time of 3:49.60. The Tigers’ 400 free relay team of Christine Woodruff, Burtch, Nikki Deering and Thieler posted a time of 3:32.68 for a second-place finish.

Meaghan Murphy led the Clemson women in the 200 fly, recording a time of 2:07.46. Kelly Urso and Mary Brewer finished fourth and fifth in the event for the Tigers, with times of 2:09.77 and 2:10.59, respectively.

Thieler posted a third-place finish in the 50 free for Clemson, with a time of 24.06. Burtch and Aurelie Gresset claimed third and fourth place in the 200 free, with times of 1:53.50 and 1:53.76, respectively. Kroeger took fifth place for the Tigers in the 100 free (52.88).

In the 500 free, Kimberly Routh placed third for Clemson (4:58.22) and Nichole Carlton was fifth (5:03.57). Kim Cober finished in fourth place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:16.14, while Carlton again took fifth (10:24.28).

Ashley Shafer posted a time of 2:21.96 for a third-place finish in the 200 breast for Clemson, while Commons finished in fourth place with a time of 2:23.16. The Tigers’ Kate Walker claimed third-place in the 200 back with a time of 2:05.82, and Urso was fifth (2:08.36). Kroeger finished the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.87 for a fifth-place finish.

The Clemson swimming and diving teams will play host to their first home meet of the season against College of Charleston on Friday, Nov. 1. The meet will be held at the Spartanburg Middle YMCA in Spartanburg, SC and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
