Streaks and Notes *Clemson returns home after a 2-1 trip to the Maui Classic. The Tigers lost to Michigan, 59-56 in the first round, then came back to beat Chaminade and Kansas State. The Tigers are 5-1 entering the Radford game.
*Clemson defeated Kansas State of the Big 12 Conference by a 79-45 score, one of Clemson’s top all-around performances in recent years. It was the fourth largest victory margin for Clemson in history over a “major conference, non-ACC” team. It was a balanced Clemson performance as four players scored in double figures. The Tigers shot 54 percent from the field, won the rebounding by 16 and had just 11 turnovers on offense. Clemson had a 40-19 lead at intermission.
*Radford is Clemson’s opponent on Monday night. The Highlanders won their first three games of the season and were 20-10 in 1997-98. Ron Bradley’s team won the Big South Tournament and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. They averaged 90 points per game over their first three games, victories over Concord, Davis & Elkins and St. Peter’s. Charles Ryan and Leslie Ballard both averaged over 20 points per game for their first three contests. Charles had 24 points in their victory over St. Peter’s, a 73-71 win.
*This will be the second meeting in history between Clemson and Radford. The Tigers won the only previous encounter, 114-76 in 1989-90, Clemson’s ACC Championship season. Derrick Forrest led Clemson in that contest with 20 points, while Dale Davis had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Elden Campbell added 16 points and eight blocked shots.
*Clemson had outstanding balance for the games in Maui. Terrell McIntyre and Harold Jamison each had 35 points in the three games, while Tom Wideman was the third leading scorer with 27. Vincent Whitt added 23, Johnny Miller scored 21 and Adam Allenspach had 20. Freshman Will Solomon had 20.
*As a team, Clemson shot 48 percent from the field, 34 percent on three point shots and 65 percent from the foul line. All the figures were higher than Clemson’s percentages heading into the Maui tournament. The Tigers were +10.0 per game in terms of rebounding for the three games in Maui.
*Larry Shyatt received some outstanding bench play in the three games in Maui. Vincent Whitt was 10-14 from the field in the three games, 71 percent and had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Allenspach had 20 points, 12 rebounds and shot 10-10 from the foul line. He had a career high 10 points in the win over Kansas State.
*Terrell McIntyre became Clemson’s career three-point goal leader against Western Carolina. He had five in that game and now has 170 for his career, three more than Chris Whitney had in his career.
*Clemson has a record of 42-4 in games in the month of November in its history. The Radford game will be the final November game for Clemson this season.
*Clemson’s victory over Western Carolina was its 32nd consecutive win over a non-conference foe in Littlejohn Coliseum and the Tigers will go for 33 in a row against Radford on Monday. Clemson has not lost a home game to a non-conference team since the 1993-94 season when South Carolina downed Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum 91-88.
