Clemson Second Entering Final Round at Furman

Clemson, SC – Ben Martin fired a second-round 71 to lead Clemson to a 294 team score and a second-place standing after two rounds of the 24-team Furman Invitational in Greenville, SC. Chattanooga has a three-shot lead entering the final round over the Tigers.

Clemson had a three shot lead with three holes to play on Saturday, but played the final three holes (7, 8 and 9) in six over par in windy conditions.

The final round will be held Sunday at the par 72 Furman University course. Clemson will play with Chattanooga and Old Dominion and will tee off between 1:00 PM and 1:50 PM. Martin, Clemson’s number-one player who will play in the Masters in three weeks, will be in the final group at 1:50 pm.

Martin has had rounds of 70 and 71 so far in the tournament and is in third place individually among the 135 players at three under par. Steve Fox of Chattanooga is in first place at six under par 138. Adam Black of Presbyterian is second at 140 and Martin is third at 141. Martin had a solid round with five birdies on Saturday, including holes, two, four and six.

Luke Hopkins had an even par 72 on Saturday thanks to 16 pars, two bogeys and an eagle. He scored his eagle on the second hole, the only eagle of the tournament so far by a Clemson golfer. He stands in eighth place at 146 after two rounds.

Jacob Burger and Corbin Mills are tied for 17th after two rounds with scores of 148. Burger also had a clean round with one birdie, and four bogeys on Saturday when he scored a 75. Mills scored a 76 on Saturday as he had three birdies, a double bogey and five bogeys.

McCuen Elmore is Clemson’s fifth player in the tournament and he scored an 83 on Saturday and stands at 163 after two rounds.

Three other Clemson golfers are playing as individuals. The best of that group is Mike Muscatell is at 149 and in 24th place, while Alex Boyd is 38th with a 151 score.
