ATHENS, GA – The swimming and diving team competed at the Georgia Invite in Athens during the weekend against some of the nation’s top teams, and came away with several impressive times. The highlight of Saturday action was junior Tom Recko’s 200 back, which was the top qualifying time for the event in the session. Recko posted a 1:46.12, the second-best effort of his career.
Several other Tigers hit personal bests during the Saturday prelims, including sophomore Meggie Mizelle, who improved her 200 butterfly time by six hundredths of a second to 2:02.76. She currently holds the seventh-best time in Clemson history.
Freshman Coy Cobb (1980-85). Dart had entered the top-ten earlier in the meet in the 100 back on Saturday. Matt Angelini put in a solid 1:51.76 in the event as well to notch a scoring spot.
Cara Lennon and Michelle Parkhurst recorded 200 back swims of 2″00.19 and 2:00.21, respectively to garner the fifth and sixth spots in the qualifying session. Kelli Kyle also had a career-best 2:01.82 in the event, making her a threat to score at ACCs later in the season.
Senior Rachel Regone put in a season-bet 50.01 in the 100 free, which ranks as the second-fastest time in the ACC this season, only 0.03 second behind the leader. Lauren Sindall got in below the 51.00 mark at 50.82, just off her personal best of 50.73.
Elizabeth Savage and Katrina Obas were both near the 2:21.00 mark in the 200 breaststroke, putting them into scoring position.
On the men’s side, Joe Knecht and David Gordon put in season-bests in the 200 fly, and Seth Broster continued his strong performance with a 1:55.55 in the event.
The Tigers will break for final exams and will return to the pool in the new year with the swimmers heading for winter training and a meet at Florida Atlantic on Jan. 2, while the divers will compete in the Tennessee Diving Invite from Jan. 3-5.
