Clemson, SC— Former Clemson golfer Stephen Behr, Jr. has been named the top Mid-Amateur golfer in the world for 2020 by Amateur Golf.com. Each year Amateur Golf.com selects the top Mid-Amateur (25 years or older) in the world according to a points system.
During his four years at Clemson, Behr was a two-time Academic All-American, including first team as a senior in 2015-16, when he won the Byron Nelson Award, which is given to the top student-athlete in college golf. He also won the Elite 90 Award as the top student on a team playing in the NCAA National Tournament.
On the course, Behr was a second-team All-American as a senior when he joined with classmate Miller Capps to lead Clemson to the ACC title. He decided to enter the business world instead of turning professional, becoming just the second Coaches Association All-American in the last 27 years (Trip Kuehne the other) who remained an amateur.
Behr graduated in 2016 and began his corporate career as a Risk Consultant for Ernst & Young. He is now in sales support for SAP Corporation in Atlanta.
Behr played in seven amateur events in 2020. He won the Birmingham National Invitational, finished second at the Georgia Mid-Amateur, and third at the Azalea Amateur. He had five top 10s overall and six top 15s.
He also earned points by playing in a LatinoAmerica Tour event at his home course, The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Georgia, and finished sixth with a 13-under-par score. The tournament medalist was former Clemson All-American Bryson Nimmer.
