Clemson Women’s Rowing Sweeps Events at Lake Lanier Night Sprints

Gainesville, GA – Clemson Women’s Rowing opened the 2010-11 season with a Night Sprints Race under the lights on the 1996 Olympic Course in Gainesville, GA on Saturday night. The race was held in conjunction with the “Taste of Gainesville”, where local residents got to sample food from the area restaurants. About 2000 people stayed to watch the racing. The Tigers finished in 1st and 2nd place in the first heat of the Women’s Open 4+ event, finishing ahead of Georgia State and Wake Forest. In the 2nd heat of the Women’s Open 4+, the Tigers also finished in 1st and 2nd place ahead of Georgia State. The grand final of this event featured all 4 of Clemson’s boats, with the crew of Coxswain Lydia Hassell and Grace Wolff and Jessica Gaul. Third place went to the boat of coxswain Victoria Graham, Jenna Zylstra, with Kelly Hall, Jordan Reemsnyder, Sarah Daanen and Heather Cummings.

The women’s open 8’s race was a battle between 4 Clemson Tiger crews. The crew of coxswain Lydia Hassell, Stephanie Cameron, Grace Wolff, Jess Gaul, Kelly Hall, Sarah Daanen. Finishing in a virtual tie for 3rd place were the crews of coxswain Torrey Wall, with Erin Grubbs, Laine Milam, Jessica Wesson along with the crew of coxswain Carly Friedman, with Jordan Reemsnyder, Connie Gorman, Emilyn Banfield, Sarah Egan, Jillian Mickle, Sarah Young and Caroline Thomas.

“I am really proud of our team and how hard we raced today,” said Clemson head coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “Everyone has been working hard this fall, with a great attitude. This was our first competition of the season, and it was exciting to be able to race on the ’96 Olympic Rowing Course, especially with the knowledge that we will get to co-host the 2013 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships in Gainesville, GA with the Lake Lanier Rowing Club. I am especially pleased with how well our team has bonded, both on and off the water this fall, and the result of this is a great unit, all working towards being the best we can be.”
