GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson’s Tyler Colvin was named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while North Carolina’s Andrew Miller was tabbed Pitcher of the Week.
Colvin, a junior outfielder, had an all-around week in helping Clemson go 5-0 last week, including two wins over Elon and a three-game sweep of No. 12 NC State. In the five games, he went 7-for-17 (.412) with four doubles, a triple, five RBIs, four runs scored, four walks and three stolen bases along with a .524 on-base percentage. The native of North Augusta, S.C., also had two assists from his left-field position. His best game of the week came in the series finale against the Wolfpack when he was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, two RBIs and a stolen base. On the season, Colvin is hitting a team-best .342 with eight doubles, five home runs, 19 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 22 games.
Miller, a junior from Gainesville, Fla., recorded a career-best 13 strikeouts over seven shutout innings in leading North Carolina to a 2-0 win over No. 4 Georgia Tech Friday. He allowed no runs on four hits and just one walk for his third shutout performance of six or more innings this season. The Yellow Jackets threatened in both in the second and fourth innings with two on and just one out, but Miller buckled down to strikeout the next two batters he faced to preserve the shutout. Miller did not allow a hit after the fifth and did not walk a batter after the second. He struck out two batters in four separate innings and fanned the side in the fourth. On the season, Miller is now 5-0, owns a 1.58 ERA, has struck out 52 batters and walked just nine in 40 innings. He is holding opponents to a .188 batting average.
