Men’s Swimming and Diving Tied For Fourth After Day One of ACC Championships

College Park, MD- The Clemson Men’s Swimming and Diving team started off the 2006 ACC Championships on a good foot at the Campus Recreation Center in College Park, MD Wednesday night. The Tigers are currently tied for fourth place with North Carolina behind strong showings in both the 800 freestyle relay, and the 200 medley relay. Clemson (58 points) trails only seven-time defending champion Virginia (70), Florida State (66), and N.C. State (62).

Clemson kicked off the meet with a sixth place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Brett MacLennan, Jonathan Mengering, Stephen Russell, and Greg Middleton touched the wall with a time of 6:37.82. The time was just seven tenths of a second off of the school record set last year. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Joel Johnson, Attila Ruszka, Mark Vahle, and Brian Regone sprinted to a school record time of 1:28.51. This was also good enough to earn them an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. The previous record was owned by the relay of Tommy Rappold, Ryan Cassella, Rob Kummer, and Drew Scheerhorn from the 2004 squad.

Clemson will be back in action Thursday morning at 11 am. They will compete in the preliminary heats of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, and 50 freestyle.
