Clemson Swimming & Diving Sweeps Wolfpack

Clemson, SC – The Clemson Swimming and Diving teams left nothing to chance Saturday at McHugh Natatorium against rival N.C. State. Both the men’s and women’s 200 freestyle relays set the pool record as the Tigers cruised to victory. The Lady Tigers were led by Rachel Regone who claimed four event victories, and led Clemson to a 168-131 win. Clemson’s women’s team is now 9-5 (3-4 ACC) on the season. On the men’s side, Mark Vahle also won four events, and the men won the meet 177-123. Clemson pulled themselves up to .500 in the ACC as they stand at 8-3 (3-3 ACC).

The Lady Tigers jumped out of the gate in the 200 medley relay as the team of Rachel Regone won the event with a time of 1:46.41. Not far behind was the team of Michelle Parkhurst, Alexandra Barsanti, Jen Grove, and Lauren Sindall who came in at 1:46.62.

Summer O’Donnell kept the ball rolling as she won the 1650 freestyle (17:20.31) in the next event. Sophomore Ashley Clay (58.67) and Katrina Obas (1:04.92) teamed with Sarah Cefalu (2:06.06) and Sarah Porri (2:06.63) also finished first and second. Regone picked up her second win of the day in the 50 freestyle (23.70) and her third win in the 100 freestyle (51.78). Lauren Sindall (53.09) finished second in the 100 free.

Ashley Clay placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:08.81) for Clemson. In the diving competition, Danielle Kazilionis (267.90) and Stephanie Fura (260.10) took the top two spots on the one-meter board. The Lady Tigers closed out the meet in grand fashion as the relay of Regone, Parkhurst, Sindall, and Kallie Deters set the pool record with a time of 1:34.30.

The men also finished first and second in the 200 medley relay to start the meet. The relay of Mark Vahle took first with a time of 1:32.08, while the team of Andy Bergren (58.59) finished first and second in the 100 breaststroke. Clemson owned the sprint events as Vahle (20.48), Matt Balderston (21.38), and Stephen Russell (21.40) placed first, second, and third in the 50 freestyle.

In the 100 freestyle, Fekete (46.65), Regone (47.03) and Balderston (47.23) had a similar result as they also took first, second, and third. Vahle (50.66) and Farnham (50.94) teamed to place first and second for Clemson in the 100 butterfly. The 200 freestyle relay of Vahle, Farnham, Herrington, and Regone closed out the meet with another pool record as they finished in a time of 1:22.48.

The Tigers will next be in action at home as they take on Duke next Saturday, February 3 at 1:00 pm from McHugh Natatorium.
