Tigers Ninth After Two Rounds At The Ridges

Sept. 9, 2001

Johnson City, TN – Jack Ferguson fired a second round 68 to lead the Clemson team to a 284 team score in the second round of The Ridges Intercollegiate at The Ridges Country Club in Johnson City, TN. The Tigers and 14 other teams played 36 holes on the day, the first college tournament of the academic year.

It was the first time in four years that Clemson played a tournament without All-Americans John Engler and Lucas Glover, first-team All-Americans in 2001 and Clemson team leaders for four years.

The Tigers shot a 297 in the first round as a team as none of the five Tigers broke par. Ferguson had the top round with a 73, while red-shirt sophomore Matt Hendrix had a 74. It was the first career round for both Ferguson and Hendrix. Veteran D.J. Trahan had a 75 in the first round, as did returning starter Gregg Jones. Ben Duncan had a 79 in the first round.

Clemson improved by 13 strokes in the second round, led by Ferguson’s 68. The Seneca, SC freshman birdied three of his last four holes to record the four-under-par score. Trahan came back with a one-under-par 70, while Jones and Hendrix had 73s. Duncan had a 78. Ferguson is the top Tiger individually, as his 141 score for 36 holes is tied for 11th. He is the only Tiger in the top 25.

Clemson is ranked ninth as a team heading into Sunday’s final round. Clemson has a team total of five-over-par, 581. TCU leads the tournament at 20-under, while Southern Cal is second at 19-under. Wake Forest is the top team at 12-under.
