Tigers Battle, Drop Match to No. 20 Memphis

CLEMSON, S.C. – After a tough battle, the Clemson Tigers fell to No. 20 Memphis in a Friday afternoon match at home. Freshmen Stewart Aronson and Wissam Abderrahman recorded wins in singles. 

In doubles, Memphis was first to strike as they secured a 6-3 win on court two. The Tigers were quick to respond as the freshman duo of Marko Mesarovic and Stewart Aronson topped the Memphis pairing of Pau Fanlo and Sam Reeve, 6-2 to even the doubles score at 1-1. 

On court one, the No. 54 ranked Clemson duo of Noa Vukadin and Max Smith faced the No. 25 ranked Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry. Clemson held the lead throughout most of the match and fought hard against the top 25 duo. 

The battle continued into the tiebreak, but Memphis was first to get to seven and took the 7-6 (7-4) win from the Tigers. With the victory, Memphis clinched the doubles point to give them the 1-0 lead. 

In singles, Memphis took wins on court one and court three to increase their lead 3-0. On court five, Aronson tabbed Clemson their first point of the match as he took down Memphis’ Mika Berghaus after he retired in the third set. 

On court two, No. 75 Abderrahman topped Conor Gannon, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) as he was able to secure a tie-break victory in the second set to seal the win. This marks the freshman’s 11th singles win of the season. 

After securing a win on court six, Memphis sealed a 4-2 overall victory to win the match. Up next, the Tigers will play host to Boston College and the College of Charleston in a Sunday doubleheader on March, 17. The match against the Eagles is slated for 12 p.m. and the match against the Cougars is set to start at 5 p.m.
