Results
The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Florida Atlantic, Denver and Utah to take the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton, FL, on Saturday. The men won by scores of 180-49 over Florida Atlantic, 158-82 over Denver and 158-84 over Utah. The women won by scores of 161-75 over Florida Atlantic, 191-49 over Denver and 140.5-95.5 over Utah.
The men (9-2, 2-1 ACC) were led by Brent Hitchcock who won the 100 free in 47.32 and the 200 free in a time of 1:43.52. Hitchcock paced a sweep of the 200 free and was followed by Jonathan Mengering (1:44.99) and Brian Regone (1:45.51). Mengering won the 500 free in 4:41.87, while Greg Middleton took third in 4:46.43. Mark Henly won the 200 back in 1:51.19 and Ryan Cassella won the 200 breast in 2:07.47.
Rob Kummer (1:54.36) and Ben Kanoy (1:57.08) took second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly. Bryce Herrington finished the 50 free in 21.89 to take second place, and Henly (1:56.18) and Cassella (1:58.53) took second and third in the 200 IM. Brett MacLennan placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.40 and Buddy Reed took second in the 100 free with a time of 47.75. The men won the 400 free relay and placed second in the 400 medley relay. Eric Shulick placed second in the one-meter diving with 268.05 points and Marsh Lindley took second in the three-meter competition with 239.85 points.
Four different Tigers won events to lead the women’s team (7-3, 0-2 ACC). Kim Cober (10:16.44) finished ahead of second place teammate Nichole Carlton (10:18.27) to win the 1000 free. Kim Routh (5:01.50) finished ahead of Carlton (5:06.14) to win the 500 free. Ashley Shafer won the 200 breast in a time of 2:23.77 and Christine Anseeuw took the 100 free in a time of 53.06.
Shelly Klaus finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.16 and was followed by teammate Meaghan Murphy, who finished in a time of 2:09.13. Routh took second place in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.58 and Anseeuw finished second in the 50 free in a time of 24.81. Kate Walker’s time of 2:10.83 was good enough for third in the 200 back. The 400 free relay took first while the 400 medley relay finished second. Jessica Watcke won both the one-meter (274.80 points) and three-meter (240.15) diving competitions. Jen Miata scored 173.70 points and Emilie Wells notched 146.40 to complete a sweep of the three-meter diving competition.
Clemson will next travel to Athens, GA, to compete in the Georgia Diving Invitational from Jan. 3-5, 2004.
