No. 8 Clemson Falls 3-2 in Double Overtime Against No. 1 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The No. 8 seed Clemson Tigers’ (8-6-5, 4-4-2 ACC) 2025 season came to a close Friday night after falling to No. 1 seed Vanderbilt (17-3-2, 7-2-1 SEC) on the road in the second round of the NCAA tournament in a 3-2 duel that required double overtime.

Renee Lyles and Anna Castenfelt each scored off of penalty kicks, with Lyles’ goal giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead 47 seconds into the match. Castenfelt’s score came in the 65th minute to tie the match 2-2.

How it Happened

In her 70th career start, Lyles capitalized on a penalty kick 47 seconds into the match to put the Tigers up 1-0, scoring the only goal of the half. Clemson finished the first half with three shots (two on goal), three saves from Addy Holgorsen and two corner attempts.

Vanderbilt scored back-to-back goals in the 55th and 57th minutes to take a 2-1 lead. In the 65th minute, Castenfelt tied the match, 2-2, after scoring on a penalty kick. The Tigers ended regulation with a total of six shots (three on goal), four saves (one from Nona Reason) and three corner attempts.

After a scoreless first overtime, Vanderbilt netted the game-winner in the 107th minute during the second overtime.
