Day of Top 10s for Clemson Golfers Past and Present

CLEMSON, SC — Sunday was a day of top 10 finishes for Clemson golfers past and present. Three current Clemson golfers finished in the top 10 of the South Carolina Amateur in Columbia, SC and three former Tigers finished in the top 10 of the PGA Tour’s Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, NY. It was the first time three former Tigers finished in the top 10 of the same PGA Tour event.

McCuen Elmore shot a 54-hole score of 208 to finish in fourth place at the South Carolina Amateur. He was the top finisher among the nine current Tigers in the field for the annual event that took place at Columbia Country Club. The event was scheduled for 72 holes, but was rained out on Friday, making the tournament a 54-hole event.

Elmore had rounds of 69-68-71 for his five under par total of 208, five shots off the pace set by the tournament champion. Corbin Mills and Crawford Reeves also had top 10 finishes with scores of 212 for the three rounds. Mills had rounds of 73-67-72 for his 212 score, while classmate Reeves had scores of 75-68-69 for his 212 score. Both players tied for 10th.

Three other Tigers finished between 14th and 25th. Will Ovenden had a 68 in the final round Sunday, tied for the third best round of the day in the field, and finished 14th with a 214 score. David Dannelly, a transfer who will be a junior at Clemson this fall, had rounds of 72-72-73 for a 217 score, good enough for a 20th place finish. Sophomore Brewer Bradshaw finished 25th with a 218 score after rounds of 74-71-73. Jacob Burger also made the cut in the large field and finished 50th at 224.

Clemson assistant coach Jordan Byrd had a strong showing with rounds of 70-71-71 and finished in a tie for 10th at 212.

On the PGA Tour, Byrd’s brother Jonathan Byrd, a Clemson All-American between 1996-2000, shot a 63 on Sunday to finish in 10th place at the Turning Stone Resort Championship. Byrd had rounds of 67-75-70-63 in recording his third top 10 finish of the year. His 63 on Sunday was his best PGA Tour round since he had a 63 at the Mercedes Championship in 2003.

Charles Warren also had a 63 during the tournament, a third round 63, and he also finished 10th at the Turning Stone Resort Championship with a 13 under par score of 275. Warren had rounds of 72-70-63-70 in recording his best finish on the PGA Tour since he finished 10th at the same event two years ago. His third round 63 was his fourth of 63 or better in his PGA Tour career, more than any other former Tiger. It was his best PGA Tour round since he had a 63 in the first round at the Traveler’s Championship in Hartford, CT in 2009.

D.J. Trahan became the third former Tiger to finish in the top 10 at the Turning Stone Resort Championship when he fired a seven under par 65 on Sunday. Trahan had rounds of 71-69-71-65 in reaching his 275 total. It was Trahan’s third top 10 finish of the year.
