Dec. 22, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson’s men’s golf team is ranked eighth in the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll and 12th in the Golfweek Collegiate poll after completion of the fall college season. Clemson is the highest rated ACC team in both rankings. North Carolina is 13th in both polls.

Clemson completed a successful fall season by competing in five events, four in stroke play and one match play. Clemson’s top tournament was a second place finish in the 18-team field at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA in September. Clemson was seventh out of 15 teams at the Ping Preview at The Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, VA in October. The Tigers finished the fall with a fifth place finish at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate. Freshman Kyle Stanley took medalist honors after winning the even in a one-hole playoff with Drew Weaver of Virginia Tech.

Clemson has a very young team, as no senior has competed in a tournament so far this year. The top three stroke average golfers are all freshmen who all rank among the top 50 golfers in the nation according to Golfweek. Stanley leads the way with a 71.00 average, followed by Ben Martin at 72.22 and Sam Saunders at 72.67.

Clemson returns to action on February 25 when it competes in the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
