CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team has their first dual meet of the season tomorrow, Jan. 16 against Louisiana State. Clemson comes into the 2026 season looking to build on an appearance in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The team returns six players from a roster that took Clemson to its first tournament appearance since 2014. The match can be streamed on TrackTennis and will have live results updating through iOnCourt.
Friday’s matchup marks the 15th all-time meeting between the two schools and as of the last matchup in 2012, the series is split even, 7-7. The two teams first met in Baton Rouge on March 19, 1977, a matchup that saw LSU come away with an 8-1 victory. In 1985, the teams met for the first time as top-10 foes. No. 9 LSU earned a 5-4 victory against No. 8 Clemson. Later that same year, the teams met in the postseason for the first time and Clemson avenged its regular season loss with a convincing 5-1 victory. The most recent meeting in 2012 resulted in a 5-2 LSU victory.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Tigers went to Boca Raton, Fla. to compete in a hidden dual match against Arizona, Florida, Illinois and Michigan. In singles play, seven of the nine Tigers that made the trip down to Florida came out with a winning record. Yannic Nittman and Marko Mesarovic each won their last two contests of the weekend and will come into their matchups against LSU each on a two-match winning streak. Gales and Bladelius won their only match as a pair on the weekend, earning a convincing victory over Michigan, 6-0.
FALL REVIEW
Clemson is aiming to keep momentum from a strong fall performance that saw multiple Tigers win tournaments and earn accolades. In Nov., Romain Gales won the singles championship at the ITA Carolina Regional and became the sixth player in program history to win an ITA Regional and the first since John Sullivan in 1988. That championship earned Gales a spot in the NCAA Singles Tournament, becoming the first Tiger to qualify for the tournament since Yannick Maden in 2013. At the tournament, Gales finished in the round of 16 and became the 18th All-American in Clemson men’s tennis history.
In Sept., Manuel Plunger and Henrik Bladelius competed in the Blue Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Ala. and defeated Auburn to win the Gray Draw. The pair went on to play North Alabama, the winners of the Blue Draw, to become tournament champions. Bladelius also received tournament MVP honors.
