Clemson, S.C.—Fresh off a victory at the Jackrabbit in Nebraska on Tuesday, Clemson returns to the course on Sunday to begin play at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at fames Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. It will be Clemson’s first team appearance at Colonial Country Club.
The 15-team field includes 10 of the top 15 teams in the nation according to the Golf Coaches Association preseason poll and 12 of the top 25 teams according to the latest Golfweek ranking.
Clemson won the Jackrabbit on Tuesday by two shots over Missouri. The Tigers shot 17-under par 847 as a team and freshman Doc Redman won the event with a 13-under par score of 203. His performance included an opening round 63 that tied the school record for low 18-hole score. His 54-hole score of 203 was the lowest by a Clemson golfer in 13 years and the lowest by any freshman in Clemson history by four shots. He is the first Clemson golfer to win a tournament in just his second event.
Bryson Nimmer enters the event as Clemson’s No. 2 golfer with a 70.33 stroke average and is the only Tiger to finish in the top 10 in each of the first two events. Senior Carson Young has a 72.17 average, third best on the team, while junior Josh Fickes is fourth at 73.67. Freshman William Nottingham, who finished 14th at The Jackrabbit, has a 74.50 average for six rounds.
Regarded as the top college tournament of the fall schedule, the field includes No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Southern Cal, No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Florida, No. 8 Stanford, No. 9 Georgia and No. 10 Oklahoma. Clemson is ranked No. 13 in the Coaches Association preseason poll, but is ninth according to the Golfweek poll, which took into account Clemson’s third place finish at the Carpet Classic and victory at The Jackrabbit.
