Clemson in Third Place Heading into Final Round at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, SC – Jacob Burger had a one-under-par round of 71 to lead Clemson to a 289 team score and a third place standing out of 22 teams after two rounds of the Furman Invitational at the Furman University Course in Greenville, SC. The Tigers are in third place after 36 holes with a team score of even par 576. Kennesaw State and Virginia Tech are tied for first at 572, just four shots ahead of the Tigers.

The final round will be played Sunday. The Tigers will tee off starting at 1:10 p.m.

Burger, who finished eight at the Furman Invitational last year, has had rounds of 72-71 so far and is Clemson’s top golfer with a 143 score, good enough for 11th place. His round on Saturday morning included four birdies. He had a birdie on the 13th hole after driving the ball in an adjoining fairway. He had three birdies in a row on the first, second and third holes, his 10th, 11th and 12th holes of the day.

McCuen Elmore was Clemson’s second best golfer on Saturday with an even par 72. It was a good comeback for Elmore, who was Clemson’s non counter on Friday. Elmore had four birdies and four bogeys and stands at 147 after two rounds

Crawford Reeves and Thomas Bradshaw each had rounds of one over par 73 on Saturday. Reeves was three over par after his first nine holes, then had birdies on the first, second and fifth holes. He had a two under par 34 on the front nine, his second nine of the day, and stands at 146 after two rounds. Bradshaw had two birdies and three bogeys for his one over par round. Clemson’s number five player for this tournament has seen his score count in each of the first two rounds and stands at one over par 145 after two rounds, good enough for 22nd place in the field of 124 golfers. Bradshaw had a team best six birdies on Friday when he had an even par 72.

Corbin Mills, Clemson’s top golfer on Friday with a 70, had a 76 on Saturday. He played the first eight holes in four over par, then drove the par four ninth green and made a birdie. But a double bogey on the seventh hole ruined his round. He is at 146 after two rounds, the same total as classmate Reeves. Mills finished third at the Furman Invitational last year with a 215 score.

Clemson is the defending champion of this tournament. Last year Clemson trailed Chattanooga by three shots entering the final round, then shot a six under par 282 in the final round to win by 14 shots. Mills shot a 67 in the final round last year to lead the Tigers on the final day.

Clemson golfer Alex Boyd is playing the tournament as an individual and is in fourth place entering the final round with a 140 score after rounds of 71 and 69. William Sjaichun of Purdue leads the tournament with a 10 under par score of 134.
