Clemson Falls 3-0 to No. 1 Virginia Following Weather Delay

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson University women’s soccer team (3-3-5, 0-2-2) lost to No. 1 Virginia 3-0 Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field following a one-hour weather delay.

How it Happened

A storm rolled in with about 30 minutes before the original kickoff time (7:00 p.m.) that ultimately pushed the match into a weather delay with a new kickoff time of 8:05 p.m.

Virginia struck in the 16th minute with a goal to take a 1-0 lead but was held in check by Clemson for the rest of the first half. The Cavaliers led the Tigers 8-4 in shots, 3-1 in corner kicks, 3-2 in saves and 7-4 in fouls throughout the first 45 minutes.

Right out of the gate in the second half, Virginia notched its second goal of the game at 45:45 and then scored their third and final goal of the match in the 52nd minute. The Tigers finished the match having less shots taken (22-7) and corner kicks (6-5) but committed fewer fouls (7-4) and had seven saves compared to Virginia’s four.

Despite the goals, both Addy Holgorsen and Nona Reason flashed highlight-worthy saves. Reason finished the match with five and Holgorsen had two.
