Clemson Drops First Road Conference Match to Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Clemson University women’s soccer team (3-2-5, 0-1-2) fell to Louisville in a 1-0 road loss Friday night.

How it Happened

In the 20th minute, Amelia Swinarski scored, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals controlled the first half, outshooting the Tigers 4-2 with more corner opportunities (4-1).

Head Coach Eddie Radwanski on the first half:

“I just thought we started the game a bit too passive, and we were trying to figure out what the temperature of the game was going to be, as opposed to setting the temperature. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal to fall behind.”

Clemson came into the second half with more competitive play, taking more shots that Louisville (3-1), having more corner opportunities (1-0) and having a couple close chances at an equalizing goal.

Radwanski on the second half:

“We lifted our level of play in the second half by playing with a little more purpose and we were more intentional. We hurt ourselves because we missed a simple pass, missed an opportunity to play somebody in and missed the connection to help us get up the field. Normally we’re pretty good at those but today we weren’t. We had three really bright opportunities where you hope to stick one of them for a score. In general, I thought we could have had more if we just would have been a little bit better in some of these areas.”

By the end of the match, Clemson and Louisville each had five shots taken, the Cardinals had five corner opportunities compared to Clemson’s one and the Cardinals committed more fouls (7-3).

Addy Holgorsen and Nona Reason split halves in goal with each recording a save. Holgorsen’s save was the 40th of her career.

Already looking at the next two matches, Radwanski stated, “Having the single game this week means there’s time to get back, recover and get back into training. We have two games the following weekend to get ready for and you have got to get ready for the next game. That’s our objective.”
