Round 1 Update
CLEMSON, S.C. — Freshman Samuel Duran and senior Thomas Higgins led Clemson with one-over-par scores of 72 in the first round of The Prestige Invitational at the PGA West Greg Norman Course in La Quinta, Calif.
Clemson finished the first round with a team score of six-over-par 290 to rank in 11th place out of 24 teams. But the Tigers are just six shots out of fourth place.
The second round will be held on Tuesday and the tournament concludes on Wednesday.
The field includes seven of the top 50 teams in the nation, including 34th-ranked Clemson. Oregon State, ranked outside the top 50, leads the way with a team score of nine-under-par 275. This is the first tournament of the spring season for Jordan Byrd’s Tigers.
Clemson played in the morning wave of 12 teams on the par 71 course that measures 7,105 yards in length.
Duran and Higgins both had two birdies and three bogeys to go with 13 pars on Monday.
Freshman Jackson Byrd made his debut in the Clemson lineup and shot a two-over-par 73. His round included one birdie, three bogeys and 14 pars. Senior Lucas Augustsson also had a two-over-par 73 thanks to two birdies and four bogeys. Oscar Bredkjaer, who came into the tournament with the top stroke average on the team (71.75), had an opening round 75.
Clemson’s top four players on Monday did not have a score worse than bogey on any hole and the five players in the lineup had just one double bogey. Clemson’s five players combined for 65 pars, most in the field, but the Tigers had just eight birdies.
