Cardiac Tigers Top Wake Forest In Overtime, 78-71

Clemson, S.C. – Senior guard Rachael Rose scored a season-high 20 points and senior guard Mia Moore (16 points) scored a program-record 10 points in overtime, and as Clemson women’s basketball (13-6, 4-3 ACC) defeated Wake Forest (12-8, 2-6 ACC) in overtime, 78-71 at Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

For the second time this season, five Tigers scored double-digit points. Rose led the way with 20, Moore and Rusne Augustinaite both added 16 each, and graduate forward Demeara Hinds and senior forward Raven Thompson logged 10 points apiece. For the eighth time this season, the Tigers connected on 10 or more three-pointers.

The Tigers’ first overtime game of the season marked the 59th such contest in Clemson women’s basketball history, and with the win, the program moved to 34-25 in overtime games overall. The win was Shawn Poppie’s fourth overtime victory of his career, and he moved to 2-1 in overtime games in his Clemson tenure.

Wake Forest shot 47.5% from the field and 50% from behind the arc, with four players scoring 10-plus points. Grace Oliver (16 points, 11 rebounds led the Demon Deacons with a double-double showing.

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
In regulation, the Tigers led for a total of 28 seconds. After three quarters, Clemson was down by six points and three minutes into the fourth, Wake Forest hit a three-pointer to stretch its lead to 10. Over the last 6:57 of the game, the Tigers put together a 15-5 scoring run capped by two Hinds free throws with 0.2 seconds remaining to tie the game. A minute into overtime, Moore drilled her first three-pointer of the game to give Clemson its first lead since the second quarter. With the clock nearing a minute and the Tigers holding on to a 71-68 lead, she hit her second three-pointer of the day, to give Clemson a six-point lead. She hit four free throws over the remaining 30 seconds of the game to cap off her program-record 10 points in overtime and ice a 78-71 Clemson victory.

  • Thompson (10 points) registered her fifth straight double-digit scoring performance.
  • Hinds’ two free throws with less than a second left capped off her ninth 10-plus point performance of the season. She finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
