CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers (16-11, 4-11 ACC) dropped a three-set (23-25, 17-25, 18-25) to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (14-10, 9-6 ACC) on Wednesday night in Jervey Gym. The midweek match is the first of two games in a three-day stretch between the Tigers and Yellow Jackets, with the second match taking place in Atlanta on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
The Tigers powered out to a 9-2 start in the opening set behind kills from Mia Moore and Khaya Gordon. Gordon tacked on a solo block during that stretch that was matched by an ace from Katherine Sandt that forced Georgia Tech to call timeout. The Yellow Jackets responded and leveled the match at 18-all before the two sides traded leads. Clemson tied things back up at 23-23, but Georgia Tech tallied back-to-back points to take the set, 25-23.
Georgia Tech carried the advantage into the second, but Gordon, McGrath and Moore closed the gap with kills. Hansen, Moore Gordon provided additional kills for Clemson, but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets strung together multiple runs to claim the set.
Nil Okur and Gordon looked to spark the defense for the Tigers with a joint block early in the third to tie things at 5-5. Moore continued to be a dominant force offensively for Clemson at the net, but Georgia Tech strung together multiple runs that led to a minimum four-point lead they maintained for the remainder of the set to take the match in three.
