Clemson Women’s Basketball Adds Corey Fox and Cayla King to Coaching Staff

CLEMSON, S.C. – Head Coach Shawn Poppie recently added new personnel – Corey Fox as Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Cayla King as Graduate Assistant – to the Clemson Women’s Basketball staff.

Coach Corey Fox was most recently at Limestone, where he had served as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach since 2004, and previously from 2001 to 2003 in the Men’s Basketball staff. During his time with the Saints, he accumulated a 386-244 record, rebuilding the women’s program and setting a school record of 34 wins in a season during 2014-15. He led the team to the program’s first Sweet 16 in 2013, to the Elite Eight in 2014, and the Final Four in 2015. He coached nine consecutive winning seasons from 2009 to 2018 and led the Saints to seven consecutive conference championships from 2012 to 2018.

“I’m excited to add Corey Fox as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach! His experience as a head coach and insight with the position will be a valuable asset to our program’s growth,” Poppie said. “We have been connected for 20+ years as he recruited me to Limestone College, gave me my first opportunity in this business, and has been a great friend and mentor ever since. He built a nationally known women’s basketball program at Limestone and he is ALL-IN to help us do the same here at Clemson.”

Cayla King comes to Clemson with two seasons of professional basketball experience in Slovenia and Australia. King played five seasons at Virginia Tech, connecting her with Poppie. King was a four-year starter for the Hokies, where she saw four NCAA Tournament Runs and was a starter in the 2023 Final Four. She owns the program record for 3FG in a game with nine, and ranks second in career games played (154).

“I’m thrilled to add more coaching talent to our team with the addition of Cayla King. I helped recruit Cayla which turned into being her position coach during our time together at Virginia Tech,” says Poppie. “Cayla is a proven winner on and off the court. She will be a great resource for our guard group as she is coming off an unbelievable college and professional career. We preach family in our program and we were able to add someone that has been family to me for quite some time with the addition of Cayla.”

Coach Poppie is entering his second season with the Tigers, coming off of a record-breaking season with Clemson Women’s Basketball. The 2024-25 squad set a new program record in threes made in a season (222) and had ranked wins over no. 20 California and no. 19 Georgia Tech.
