CLEMSON, S.C. — Jordan Byrd’s Clemson golf team will be one of 12 teams, competing in the Invitational at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. starting on Monday and Tuesday September 15-16. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the course designed my Pete Dye that opened in 1983. It has been the host of the US Amateur and the NCAA tournament.
Clemson, Duke and Virginia are the ACC teams in the field, while SEC teams Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Auburn also are included. Marquette, host school UT Chattanooga, College of Charleston and Pepperdine round out the field. National rankings have not been released yet, but it is anticipated that as many as seven of the top 10 teams in the nation will be in the field.
Clemson is coming off a tie for second place in the 16 team field at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate. Thomas Higgins will be in the number-one position in the Clemson lineup after his eighth-place finish at Myrtle Beach thanks to a five-under-par 211 score. It was his fifth career top 10 finish.
Rich Wills and Oscar Bredkjaer finished in a tie for 20th at Myrtle Beach and they also will be in the Clemson lineup this week. Wills had an opening round 68 that tied his career best round. Bredkjaer had a second round 65 that was the low round of the tournament by a Clemson golfer. His 65 was bogey free with seven birdies.
Colin Salema, who shot a one-under par 215 in the opening tournament will be in the lineup along with senior Lucas Augustsson, who had an even-par 216 at Myrtle Beach. Salema is coming off a strong summer when he won the Carolinas Amateur by six shots and finished second at the Monroe Amateur. Augustsson, a transfer from East Carolina, had the top stroke average last year among returning Clemson golfers this year.
Clemson players will begin play at 8:30 am eastern time on the par 72 course. The Tigers will play with Pepperdine and Virginia. Live scoring will be available HERE.
