CLEMSON LOOKING FOR THIRD WIN IN A ROW–The Clemson Women’s basketball team will be looking for its third ACC win in a row. Clemson has defeated 15th-ranked North Carolina, 60-59, on January 10. On January 13, the Lady Tigers defeated third-ranked N.C. State, 71-56. The Lady Tigers have never defeated three-top 25 teams in a row.

DUKE UPDATE–Duke will enter the game with a 15-1 record overall and a 4-0 mark in the ACC. The Blue Devils are ranked eighth by the USA Today poll and 11th by the Associated Press.

Floyd Leads Lady Tigers to Upset of #3 NC State-Freshman Chrissy Floyd scored 15 points to lead five Lady Tigers in double figures, as Clemson upset third-ranked NC State Thursday, January 13, at Littlejohn Coliseum, 71-56. It was the second straight win over a top 12 opponent for Jim Davis’s team. Clemson downed 12th-ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Monday evening, 60-59.
It was the first loss of the season for Kay Yow’s team from NC State. They were attempting to tie the school record for consecutive wins. NC State is now 14-1 overall, 5-1 in the ACC. Clemson never trailed in the game.
Clemson improved to 11-5 overall, 2-2 in the ACC. It was the highest ranked win for Clemson since the season opener of the 1996-97 season when Clemson upset second-ranked Georgia, 83-78. It was the 44th win over a Top 25 team for Jim Davis, the fifth time he has upset a top 15 NC State team in the last four years. It was Clemson’s fifth straight win over NC State, regardless of site and the fifth straight year Clemson has downed the Pack in Littlejohn Coliseum.
Floyd scored 15 points on 7-14 shooting off the bench in her 30 minutes of play. Nuria Forns added 13 points and seven rebounds. Starting guards Krystal Scott scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, while starting center Joanie Mungro added 10 points and eight rebounds. Mungro, who is playing this season with a pace-maker to regulate a non-life threatening heart ailment, went head to head with ACC Player of the Year Summer Erb.
Erb scored 13 and had nine rebounds, but she got just five field goal attempts against Mungro and the Clemson defense in her 31 minutes of play. Kaayla Chones, daughter of former Marquette All-American and NBA first-round pick Jim Chones, had 11 points, but she was the only other Wolfpack player in double figures. Terah James added eight in a starting role, while Amy Simpson had the same number off the bench.
Clemson held NC State to 56 points, 17 under their average and six fewer than their previous low total this season. The Pack hit just 37.7 percent from the field and just 26 percent on three-point shots. They had a 6/18 assist/turnover ratio. Clemson won the battle of the boards 45-33 against the bigger Wolfpack team, and Clemson committed just 13 turnovers.
The Lady Tigers were also outstanding at the free throw line, hitting 21-28 compared to 11-20 for NC State. Clemson was especially proficient in the clutch, hitting 13-15 from the line inside the last five minutes of the game.
Clemson opened a 7-0 lead and were never headed. The Pack cut the lead to 7-5, but Clemson went on a 17-2 run to take a 24-7 lead with 5:10 left in the half. Clemson’s defense swarmed over Summer Erb to deflect lob passes. The senior had just three shots and four points the entire first half. NC State rallied the remainder of the half and cut the margin to nine at intermission behind the play of Amy Simpson and Ivy Gardner, who combined for eight points in the last 4:36 of the game.
NC State cut the lead to seven twice in the opening minutes of the second half behind Chones, the last time at 28-21. Clemson moved the lead back to double figures at 31-21 on a field goal by Erin Batth with 17:33 left. NC State cut the margin under nine just once the remainder of the contest.
A 15-6 run, highlighted by fastbreak buckets and assists from Floyd, and strong inside play by Batth and Mungro highlighted the action for Clemson in the middle of the second half. A layup by Floyd off an in-bounds play gave Clemson a 58-40 lead with just over three minutes left. NC State cut the lead to 58-48 with 1:35 left, but Clemson made 10 straight free throws down the stretch.
CLEMSON UPSETS NORTH CAROLINA–Krystal Scott scored a career-high 16 points, while Chrissy Floyd added 15 in leading Clemson to a 60-59 upset win over 12th-ranked North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC Monday, January 10. This was the first time Clemson has defeated North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC since 1990. Erin Batth had 11 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. The win over 12th-ranked North Carolina on January 10, was the highest ranked team Clemson has defeated on the road since the Lady Tigers defeated ninth-ranked Virginia 58-44 on January 4, 1997.
UPCOMING ACTION–Clemson will play at Duke, Sunday January 16, at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN 2 in the Lady Tigers’ next action. Clemson will play at Virginia on January 20. Clemson’s next home game will be Monday, January 24 as the Lady Tigers entertain Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest.
BATTH APPROACHING 500 CAREER POINT MARK–Erin Batth needs 24 more points to reach the 500 plateau. Currently, Batth has 476 career points and has averaged 6.3 ppg. in her career. She also has 353 rebounds or 4.6 rpg. for her career.
JOANIE MUNGRO IS BALANCED IN REBOUNDING–Joanie Mungro has 106 offensive rebounds and 103 defensive rebounds in her career at Clemson. The senior was a junior college transfer. For her career at Clemson, she is averaging 5.0 rpg.
CLEMSON IS YOUNG TEAM–Clemson only has two players who have played in 70 or more career games at Clemson. Erin Batth has played in 76 career games, and Nuria Forns has played in 78. Both are juniors on the Clemson team. As far as minutes played in a career, only freshman Chrissy Floyd has averaged more than 20 minutes per game. Floyd is averaging 28.7 minutes per game.
MUNGRO OVERCOMES OBSTACLES–Clemson’s Joanie Mungro had a pacemaker inserted in December. She has a rare, non-life threatening heart ailment that required a pacemaker. So far this season, she is averaging 22.8 minutes per game and has started nine of the 10 games she has played.
Mungro is the Lady Tigers’ second leading rebounder this season with a 6.7 rpg. mark. Mungro leads the Lady Tigers in field goal pct. this season as she has hit 28-53 field goals for a .528 mark. For her career at Clemson, she has hit 89-182 from the field for a .489 pct.
LADY TIGER SHOOTING–Clemson has hit 359-929 from the field this season for a .386 mark. The Lady Tigers have shot over 40% six times, and over 50% once this year. The Clemson opponents are shooting 346-920 from the floor for a .376

BATTH HAS COME ON STRONG IN LAST SEVEN GAMES–Clemson’s Erin Batth scored a career-high 21 points vs. East Carolina as she was 10-13 from the floor on 12-30-99. In the last seven games, she has scored 84 points or 12.0 ppg. She has led the Lady Tigers in rebounding in seven games this season.
KRYSTAL SCOTT HAS BECOME STARTER THIS SEASON–Krystal Scott has more than tripled her playing time this season compared to her playing time last year. This year she has played 473 minutes, and last year she played 155 minutes the entire year. She is averaging 8.6 ppg. this season and leads the squad in assists with 45. She is also a 72% free throw shooter this season. In Clemson’s upset win over North Carolina on January 10, Scott scored a career-high 16 points.
VS. ACC FOES–Chrissy Floyd has averaged 16.0 ppg. in Clemson’s four ACC games this season. Krystal Scott is averaging 11.8 ppg. Erin Batth is also averaging 8.5 rpg. in Clemson’s ACC outings.
MARYLAND DEFEATS CLEMSON 74-58–Tiffany Brown scored a career high 29 points, while Rosita Melbourne added a career-high 15 points as Maryland defeated Clemson 74-58 in an Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball game at Clemson, SC Thursday, January 6.
The Maryland win broke a five game winning streak in the series by Clemson.
Brown was 9-17 from the field, and hit a school record eight three-point field goals in 16 attempts. The eight three-point field goals is a single-game Maryland school record and it is the most three-point field goals scored by a Clemson opponent.
Maryland shot 15-29 from the floor for a .517 pct. and was 8-14 from three-point range in the first half. The Terrapins cooled down in the second half and shot 13-33 from the floor for a .394 pct. and were only 2-8 from the three-point line. For the game, Maryland was 28-62 (.452) from the field and 10-22 from the three point stripe for a .455 pct.
The Lady Tigers shot 19-67 from the field for a .284 figure, a season low for Clemson.

Maryland won the battle of the boards 48-40 and was led in rebounding by Rosita Melbourne with 10 boards. Mungro led Clemson in rebounding with nine.
Maryland took an early 12-8 lead as Tiffany Brown and Marche Strickland both hit two three-point goals each. Clemson took a 15-14 lead with 13:53 left to go in the first half as Amirah Leonard hit a short jumper. From this point, the Terrapins went on a 18-3 run and took a 32-18 lead with 5:37 remaining. In this rally, Brown hit three three-point goals.
In the second half, Clemson came within nine points of the lead, 49-40, as Floyd hit a layup with 10:50 remaining, but Maryland outscored Clemson 11-5 and had a 60-45 lead with 6:27 left in the game as Melbourne hit a layup.
LEONARD NAMED TO THE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM–Amirah Leonard was named to the All-Tournament team at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on November 24 & 26. Leonard scored a career-high 25 points vs. Old Dominion and had 15 points in the Kentucky game.
HEAD COACH JIM DAVIS HAS 270 WINS AT CLEMSON–Head Coach Jim Davis has a 270-121 record at Clemson as he is in his 13th season. During his NCAA Division I career, he has a 289-129 record. Davis spent one season, 1986-87, at Middle Tennessee State and compiled a 19-8 record with the Lady Raiders that season.
CLEMSON HEAD COACH OVER THE CENTURY MARK IN ACC WINS–Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis has a 114-74 record against ACC foes during the regular season. He is the fourth winningest coach in the history of the ACC with the 114 league victories.
