Clemson Opens Season With Sweep of Duke, Boston University

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson rowing team opened the spring season in convincing fashion, sweeping Duke and the Boston University lightweights in all six races held Saturday morning on a rainy Lake Hartwell.

“I was really happy with their performance today,” said head coach Stephen Frazier Wong. “We wanted to execute the race plan we had set and all of the boats did a good job following through with them.”

The first race of the day matched up the first and second varsity fours of Clemson and Duke against each other. The Tiger 1V4 took an early lead and never looked back, winning with a time of 7:49.30. The two Blue Devil boats finished second and third while the Clemson 2V4 finished fourth with a time of 8:07.23

Race two featured the BU lightweight 2V8 against the 3V8 and 4V8 for Clemson and Duke. In a close battle down the course, the Clemson 3V8 was able to pull away for the victory with a time of 7:15.61.

The top boats hit the water in race three with Clemson finishing in first and third. The Clemson 1V8 got the win, rowing to a time of 6:40.85 while the Tiger 2V8 finished at 6:54.32.

Clemson won races four, five and six in matchups that echoed one, two and three. The Clemson 1V4 earned their second win of the day in race four, rowing to a time of 7:51.21 while the Tiger 1V8 and 3V8 each notched wins with times of 6:48.89 and 7:17.68 respectively. The Clemson 2V8 and 2V4 finished third in their second race of the day while the Clemson 4V8 finished fourth in race five.

After a week off, Clemson returns to action on Sunday, March 29 when the Tigers travel to Virginia for the Occoquan Sprints.
