Women’s Tennis To Open Play In 2007 NCAA Regional Championships On Friday

CLEMSON, SC – The sixth-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team will begin play in the 2007 NCAA Regional Championships on Friday, May 11, as the Tigers will face Coastal Carolina in first-round action. The teams will square off at 10:00 am at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, SC. Clemson earned the #7 overall seed in the tournament, as well as the #1 seed in the regional, after compiling a 20-4 record for the season.

The Chanticleers will bring a 19-5 overall record into the contest.

Tickets for the event will be available for purchase one hour prior to the match-up and cost $5 for adults and $3 for youth and college students with appropriate identification. The parking lot on Heisman Street adjacent to the Fike Recreation Center will be reserved for the 2007 NCAA Women’s Tennis Regional Championships.

Coastal Carolina received a bid to the 2007 NCAA Championships after winning the Big South Conference title last month. Friday’s meeting between the Chanticleers and Tigers will be the first in history.

Ani Mijacika leads the Clemson squad with a 19-3 dual-match singles record while also boasting the #27 national ranking. The native of Makarska, Croatia was named the 2007 ACC Freshman-of-the-Year after completing a perfect regular season in singles action at 11-0. She has also teamed with sophomore Federica van Adrichem in doubles to post a 14-4 record in the spring. The Tiger tandem is currently ranked 11th in the Fila/ITA Tennis poll and has won its last four decisions.

The regional final will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 11:00 am at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The second-round match will feature the winners from day one’s action. Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia will meet on Friday at 1:00 pm in the second opening-round contest of the Clemson regional.
