Clemson Women’s Track And Field Finishes 21st At NCAA Indoor Championships

March 9, 2002

FAYETTEVILLE, AR – The Clemson women’s track and field posted a 21st-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field meet. The Lady Tigers’ Sheri Smith and Jamine Moton earned All-America honors in the triple jump and shot put, respectively.

“We came out here with two people and scored 11 points,” said head coach Marcia Noad. “We had a good experience and did well considering we only had the two people and finished 21st. Obviously, during the outdoor season we will have more depth at the NCAA meet and will finish higher. But I think this is a good finish to our indoor season.”

Smith recorded a personal-record mark of 42’5.5″ in the finals of the triple jump to finish seventh overall, earning All-America accolades. With that mark, the senior from the Bronx, NY, moved into second-place on Clemson’s all-time list.

Moton, a senior from Glassboro, NJ, earned her fifth All-American honor with an eighth-place finish and mark of 53’8.25″.

“I think mentally I was about 45% of my best and as far as competition goes, I don’t think I was tip-top mentally or emotionally,” said Moton. “I am not making excuses for my performance but it definitely has an effect on the way I compete. I was drained and couldn’t put it together today. I am happy to walk away with the weight throw collegiate record but I have work to do before the outdoor season to be able to compete at the next level.”

Assistant coach Cathrine Erickson said, “Jamine has come along way in the last year. Last year, she was the underdog trying to knock someone off. This year, she is the top dog trying to make it happen. As she has more experience competing at this level, we will see better and better results. We are happy to represent Clemson and thank the administration for the support they continue to give us.”
