Summer Update on Clemson Men?s Soccer Players

Summer Update on Clemson Men’s Soccer Players CLEMSON, SC— Former Tiger forward, Austin Savage who plays, for the Charleston Battery, scored the winning goal in his team’s 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers U23’s. This victory advanced the Battery to the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup where they will play San Hose Earthquakes of the MLS on Tuesday at Blackbaud Stadium.    Kyle Fisher and Paul Clowes, both rising sophomores at Clemson, are playing for the Orlando City U23s this summer, a PDL team.   Fisher was named to the PDL Team-of-the-Week for his strong defensive play and goal in a 3-1 win against IMG last Sunday.   Clowes had an assist in this match as well.   Iain Smith, a sophomore for the Tigers, is playing for the Atlanta Revolution.    Smith’s team advanced to the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and were defeated by the Atlanta Silverbacks 3-2.   Smith scored in this game for the Revolution in the 16th minute of this match.   Former Tiger goalkeeper, Cody Mizell plays for the Silverbacks. The Silverbacks will meet Real Salt Lake of the MLS in the third round. Manolo Sanchez played a large part in his team, Reading United, advancing to the third round of the Lamar U.S. Open Cup.   In a second round US Open Cup battle of two Philadelphia Union affiliates, Reading United pulled off a 1-0 upset victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders last Tuesday night. A Mario Pinto goal in the ninth minute and 90 minutes of sound defending sent United through to the third round for the first time in club history. Reading United will play the New York Red Bulls in the third round.    The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a tournament that is open to any team under the auspices of US Soccer.  This includes any amateur or professional team in the United States such as NPSL, PDL, USASA, USSSA and US Club Soccer.    The MLS teams are seeded and start participating in the third round.    Jack Metcalf, Alex Stockinger and Ara Amirkanian are playing for the SC United FC Bantams. The Bantams are the only men’s Premier Development League (PDL) soccer club in South Carolina.   This team plays it home matches in Greenwood, SC and in Columbia, SC.        Metcalf and Stockinger are rising seniors, while Amirkanian is a rising junior at Clemson.
