No. 18 Virginia Defeats Clemson, 1-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Chase Neinken’s goal with 2:09 left in regulation broke a scoreless tie, and No. 18 Virginia defeated Clemson, 1-0, Friday night at Charlottesville, VA in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer match.

UVa won its sixth-straight game and remained unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Cavaliers are 8-3 overall and 4-0 in league play. Clemson is now 3-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the ACC.

Virginia’s Matt Mitchell took a corner kick in the 88th minute, which Tony Tchani headed towards goal. Tchani’s header was blocked by a Clemson defender and Neinken gathered the rebound and finished to the lower left of the net for the score. Virginia scored at the 87:51 mark.

For Neinken, it was his first goal of the year and the first game-winner of his career. Tchani earned the assist, his third of the year.

Nathan Thornton had shots for Clemson, while Tiger goalkeeper Joe Bendik had five saves.

Clemson will play at Wofford on Tuesday, and will play host to ACC foe N.C. State next Friday night.
