Clemson’s Doubles Team Is Upset Winner Over Top-Seeded Rice Pair

May 29, 2004

Clemson’s doubles team of Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins upset the number one seed and the number one ranked doubles team of Richard Barker and William Barker of Rice in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the NCAA Individual Doubles Tournament Round of 8 at Tulsa, OK Saturday afternoon.

This is the first time since 1987 that the Tigers have had a doubles team to reach the final four in the NCAA Individual Doubles Tournament. This is only the second Clemson’s doubles to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Doubles Tournament. The Tigers’ Vince Van Gelderen and Kent Kinnear were defeated in the semifinals in 1987.

Jenkins and Thompson will play Sam Warberg and K.C. Corkery of Stanford Sunday afternoon. Warberg and Corkery are seeded 9-16.

Jenkins and Thompson now have a 24-19 record overall as a doubles team.
