Clemson Women’s Tennis Team Falls To Second-Ranked Georgia On Wednesday

ATHENS, GA – The 12th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team lost a 6-1 decision to second-ranked Georgia on Wednesday afternoon in Athens. The Tigers fall to 6-2 on the season, with both losses coming to teams ranked in the top-six nationally. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 9-1 overall.

The Tigers’ sixth-ranked doubles team of Maria Brito and Julie Coin won an 8-4 decision at flight two doubles over Georgia’s (T-#32) Jitka Schonfeldova and Evgenia Subbotina. The Bulldogs’ Natalie Frazier and Douglas Wink defeated Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts by a score of 8-6 at flight three. Georgia clinched the doubles point with fourth-ranked Agata Cioroch and Shadisha Robinson winning a 9-8(4) decision over the Tigers’ 30th-ranked Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie at the number one position.

In singles action, eighth-ranked Coin fell to top-ranked Cioroch by a score of 6-1, 6-2 at flight one, while #51 Alvarez dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to #9 Robinson at flight two. The Tigers’ Lacelarie fell to #93 Subbotina (6-3, 6-0) at three singles and Rombouts was defeated by Schonfeldova (6-0, 6-3) at flight four. Clemson’s Brito lost a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Frazier at number five singles. LeSaldo recorded the lone singles victory for the Tigers against the Bulldogs, defeating Alexandra Smith by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(10-8) at flight six.

The Tigers will open the Atlantic Coast Conference season at home this weekend, as they play host to NC State and Wake Forest. The Tigers will take on the Wolfpack on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and will face the Demon Deacons on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
